If you are planning a trip to Sweden there are many places that you can visit to get a basic background on the country. I am going to tell you about a couple of places that I found to be very interesting to me and I hope that you find them to be interesting also.
Stockholm
King Birger Jarl founded Stockholm seven hundred years ago. If you are interested in exploring the city a good place to get started would be the “old town” Gamla Stan. In Gamla Stan you will find clusters of old buildings and streets that are outlined with cobble stone. There are plenty of little boutiques, handicrafts and antique shops there that you can visit to get a feel of the culture there and their way of life.
In Stockholm there are three churches that have historic value; they are the Storkyrkan, Riddarholm, and the German Church. Overlooking the harbor you will find the Royal Palace. The Royal Palace is the home to:
1) the State Apartments
2) the Crown Jewels
3) the Hall of State and Chapel Royal
4) Royal Armory
5) The Palace Museums
Upon the edge of Lake Malaren is Stockholm’s elegant city hall Stradshuset. From the top of the hall you can get a spectacular view of the capital.
The Island of Djurgarden is also a well known place to visit, due to the Vasa Museum, which houses the three hundred and sixty year old wooden warship that was recovered from the bottom of Stockholm’s harbor in the year of nineteen sixty one. You can reach the island by bus or ferry, whichever way you choose to travel.
Also in
Across the road you will find Grona Lund which is an amusement park filled with laughter and smiling faces. The city along is home to over fifty museums and no fewer than eight can be visited in Djurgarden. Some of which I have listed below for your reference.
1) Nordic Museum (Nordiska Musset)
2) Waldermarsudde House, which was home to the artist Prince Eugen up until 1947 and then it, was Liljevalchs Konsthall.
3) The Historical Museum, which holds medieval art and some things that are very important to prehistoric Sweden.
4) The National Museum, which calls home to national collections of painting, sculptures, applied arts, printings and drawings.
Excursions
While you are here, why not take a trip out on the waters of Lake Malaren and part of the harbor. You can do this if you take a tour called “Under the Bridges of Stockholm”, this tour goes in a circular motion through the harbor and the lake. If you are looking for a longer trip try going to a resort like Saltsjobaden, Sandhamn, or Vaxholm
