Build your own solar oven for on-the-go eco-cooking

With the end of summer coming up fast you might think a solar cooker, or solar oven, is useless, but that’s not true. Even in winter you can use one. My son used to go to an eco-charter in New Mexico, and they used a solar oven each week during the school year to cook tortillas. Granted, New Mexico may be sunnier than some places but you can still build one then give it a whirl when the sun rears it’s face. Solar cookers are a must know eco-cooking skill if you camp a lot, like road trips, have an RV, or simply want a greener stay-at-home vacation in the back yard. Why use a solar cooker?: Obviously this sort of cooker heats up using renewable, clean energy vs. oil and electricity. It’s totally free. The sun usually doesn’t charge you $ for use. With traditional cooking methods you can run into smoke but with with solar cooking, there’s no smoke thus no harmful carcinogens, in you or your food. Solar cookers are fun for the entire family and provide valuable learning opportunities about sustainability, science, cooking, and more. For travelers, a solar cooker is

especially handy. You can make a small one and easily take it along with you on a road trip or when camping. You can even make on on the fly with very few materials. There are limits to solar cooking, but it’s handy enough that you can totally turn out an entire meal on a solar cooker and best of all, while you can buy one, it’s not complicated to build one. You don’t have to have super handy skills to manage. A younger child could build a simple one.
