Zanzibar International Film Festival: Late June/Early July

April 30th, 2007 at 01:24am Under Travel

I will be traveling by myself in East Africa for a few months starting in early June, so I’m looking for travel mates. I plan on flying from Kigali to Dar Es Salaam on or around June 29 to check out the 10th Annual Zanzibar International Film Festival plus scuba diving and the beach for a few days, and then making my way to Kilimanjaro and then onto the Serengetti.
The Festival is supposed to be one of the biggest in Africa. Has anyone ever attended it before?
I am then meeting people at Kilimanjaro on July 5 for an 8-day climb on the machame route, and then if I’m still alive, I’ll venture over to the Serengetti. Besides Kilimanjaro, I’m planning on doing this all myself without booking any overland tour - not sure if this is a good idea or not? And even though I’m flying into […]

Gorilla Tracking in Uganda or Rwanda, then Zanzibar Film Festival

April 30th, 2007 at 01:11am Under Travel

I will be traveling by myself in East Africa for a few months starting in early June. I plan on doing a Gorilla tracking safari either the first or last week of June (preferably in Rwanda), and I am looking for some advice and possibly a travel partner.
As of now I will probably book a guided tour with a Ugandan operator who will take me from Jinja, Uganda to a Gorilla site in Rwanda. However, I’d like to avoid paying the high tour fees (on top of the $500 park entry fees). Can anyone suggest a reputable, cheap tour operator? Or is it easy to get to the site on your own and book the permit on your own beforehand from outside the country (I’m in North America).
People interesting in traveling together, I plan on spending a day or two in Kigali after the Gorilla safari, then flying to […]

Volunteer in Kenya, then head south

April 23rd, 2007 at 11:03pm Under Travel

To all,
I am a 26-year old straight male from New York City.
I want to volunteer in or around Nairobi between July 1st and July 22nd, but I’m still searching for alternatives to the typical high “placement fee” programs like i-to-i or African Impact. I’m looking for a project where I can work in some sort of construction project for housing, schools or hospitals. I’d like to get into economic development at some point, so what better way to get exposed to the conditions on the ground that by working side-by-side with people from the community. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.
Regarding traveling afterwards. I plan on traveling through eastern/southern Africa until the end of August. I was planning on doing a Kilimanjaro climb on or around July 25th, and then going on two safaris via go2africa:
August 5 to 11th: http://www.overlandafrica.com/tours_temp.asp?TourNo=185
August 11th to August 26th: http://www.overlandafrica.com/tours_temp.asp?TourNo=331
I’ve only […]
