Memorable moment: At best, a design exhibition combines theory, aesthetics and products in a way that makes you pay more attention to the objects you encounter in everyday life. So it is with the stellar Design Life Now: National Design Triennial 2006 currently at New York’s Cooper-Hewitt Museum.
Amid three floors of furniture, fashion, graphic art, industrial and interior design are several displays that will be familiar to American consumers — from Apple’s iconic iPod advertising campaign, to Target’s easy-to-read prescription labels, to the Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner. There are also whiz-bang products, like the transparent collapsible sea kayak, as well as progressive uses of technology, such as a virtual reality device for patients dealing with terminal pain and remote control "toy" dogs that can troll landfills for contaminants.
And then there’s a display sure to please all air travelers: Boeing’s new 787 Dreamliner, lauded by the exhibition for the […]

Does anyone have any recommendations on travel books about Africa. I’m geared towards budeget traveling. Is there a book out there that encompasses the whole of Africa? Something similiar to the “Let’s Go Europe” book? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

DOES ANYONE KNOW OF ANY COUNTRIES IN AFRICA BESIDES SOUTH AFRICA THAT US CITIZENS CAN TRAVEL TO WITHOUT HAVING A VISA? I’D LIKE TO TRAVEL IN MARCH/APRIL (LAST MINUTE HOLIDAY) SO I DON’T HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO GET A VISA FOR KENYA OR TANZANIA.
THANKS

Memorable moment: Taking in the view of downtown Kansas City from atop the 217-foot Liberty Memorial, the nation’s only museum and monument dedicated exclusively to World War I. The venue – which includes both the soaring Memorial Tower and a fantastic interactive museum – will entertain both history buffs and those who simply enjoy an awe-inspiring view. The panorama from the 217-foot tower is accentuated by its hilltop location just south of downtown. General admission prices are $4 for the tower or $10 for a museum-tower combo.
Tip: There’s no need to head indoors to go shoppng in Kansas City. Shopaholics will delight in Country Club Plaza, one of the nation’s largest outdoor shopping districts. With all the amenities of an upscale mall, this pedestrian-friendly retail space is built to mimic the feel of Old Europe. Hipsters can also find hangouts to see and be seen in, whether it’s at […]

Iwill shortly be moving to the USA from the UK and before I do, I want to travel one last time. The flights to Africa from the states are just way too high and I’ve found a really cheap flight to the Gambia. I’ll only be spending a week there but does anyone have any information about what there is to do? accommodation etc? I will be travelling on a buget so expensive hotels are a no no for me. Thanks

Memorable experience: When my sister suggested celebrating the holidays with a Caribbean cruise, I cringed. Load up on hand sanitizers to spend Christmas surrounded by throngs of sugar-fueled tots and sunburned boozers at a poolside hairy chest contest?
Bah, humbug.
But a last-minute deal of $475 per person for four days in an outside cabin, coupled with the promise of balmy weather and turkey dinner with no dishes to clean, defrosted my anti-Fun Ship resolve. And our Miami-based cruise on Carnival’s newly refurbished Fascination, one of the company’s oldest and smallest ships, proved my outdated notions about mass-market cruising were all wet.
The utilitarian cabins I’d remembered from a decade ago had been updated with cushy duvets and flat screen TVs. The food, from West Indian roasted pumpkin soup to low-calorie banana cake, was as good or better than most of the restaurant fare I’d sampled back home in Washington, D.C. […]
