I took the train in Williams. The home of the Grand Canyon Railway. I upgraded our tickets and had drinks served to us as we traveled. I really enjoyed the way the Hotel decorated for the Polar Express and how Christmas was being celebrated there in Williams. Parents and children were in PJ’s. […]

Spending many hours watching people come to view one of Mother Nature’s best creations is very enjoyable. No matter where people come from, it is always interesting to see their reaction to such a marvelous place like the Grand Canyon South Rim.
The shuttle bus that runs through the park is a convenient option. Take the […]

Having stayed at the Kaibab Lodge in the early 90’s. We thought it was awful. Old creaky beds, tiny bathrooms (where if you sat on the toilet you could rest your arms on the sink). It was cheap then - about what you would expect to pay for a halfway decent motel like the Day’s […]

Under Las Vegas
Memorable experience: Hiking in the southern Nevada desert. Unless you’re a die-hard gambler, Las Vegas and The Strip can grow a little tiresome after 48 hours or so. So if you’re looking to mix things up – or just spend a day that doesn’t involve losing money at the blackjack tables – consider a side trip to Nevada’s Valley of Fire State Park and the surrounding Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
The Valley of Fire State Park is just about an hour’s drive from Las Vegas on Interstate 15, but the scenic way involves taking Lake Mead Drive, which roughly follows the Lake Mead shoreline as it winds through the sandy and mountainous Nevada desert. We were wowed by our drive through the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, taking several opportunities along the way to get out of the car for mini-hikes across dry river beds and to the […]

I visited the Grand Canyon a couple of years ago while on vacation in the USA.
We camped at the Grand Canyon for a couple of days giving us to time to really explore this vast wonder. It is absolutely breathtaking. Until you stand at the edge, you really don’t have any idea just how truly […]

Memorable experience: The middle-aged man motioned with his hand. Follow me. As I left the knickknack-packed sidewalks of Dongtai Road — Shanghai’s answer to London’s Portobello Road outdoor antique market — I did wonder if this was the most prudent move. Although throughout my stay in this bustling city I’d always felt exceedingly safe, this invitation to enter a dark and crumbling row house did give me pause.
My concern was unwarranted. After climbing a wooden staircase so narrow it would have denied entrance to any NFL player, and so rickety as to cause me to lose my footing twice, I emerged into a room brimming with an awful past. By the light of a single bulb, I made out the faces and figures of hundreds of statuettes, all testifying to Mao’s Cultural Revolution of the 1960s, when anyone remotely connected to education was branded an enemy of the state. […]

Memorable moment: On an unwavering stretch of asphalt that cuts across the Patagonian wilderness, our Punta Arenas-bound van stopped for refreshments at a roadside teahouse in Villa Tehuelche, Chile.
We had spent several days hiking in the southernmost reaches of this string-bean nation, regaled by rich scenery and abundant wildlife — flamingos, foxes, guanaco and, perhaps most spectacularly, a pair of Andean condors, riding the thermals low over our heads. Their massive wingspans seemed to momentarily block the sun, and gazing upward, we let out a collective gasp, cognizant of our good fortune in this close encounter with these magnificent creatures.
We anticipated no such wow factor at the teahouse, which, like much of Patagonian commerce was a lonely way station surrounded by sheep pens. Inside it was warm and pleasant. Plastic cloths covered the tables, souvenir china plates decorated the walls and an unseen sound system cranked out […]

Memorable experience: I’ve been to Dallas several times to celebrate — or wallow in misery — after the Oklahoma-Texas football game. The hipster enclave of Deep Ellum has been the place to do this. On my recent weekend trip to Big D, I thought I’d forgo the nightlife and stick to shopping. But the former burgeoning district of artists and loft apartments looked more suited for a modern-day wild-west shoot out. The streets were bare.
I found one shop to suit my taste: Counter Culture Vintage Store (2702 Main Street). It has a kitschy collection of clothes worth a quick browse. But this gem is the only one on the block.
I couldn’t figure out exactly why this neighborhood looked so washed up, so I contacted the Deep Ellum Public Improvement District. President Barry Annino said when the tech boom busted, everyone left. Now, a lot of people are waiting […]
